06 December 2011: Flying Gas Cooker

TWF designed & developed a practical “flying” gas hob for the Royal College of Music’s production of Le Docteur Miracle at the Britten Theatre. Bizet’s early one act comic opera culminates in the cooking of an omelette live on set which designer Madelaine Boyd had embedded into a kitchen island unit which arrived from above the stage with panache and smoke. Coordinating with Paul Tucker, Production Manager at the RCM, and Madelaine we were able to design and build the gas hob with practical fail safe controls both on and offstage such that Westminster City Council and London Fire Brigade authorized the effect to be used for public performances. “The cooker worked!” – Louie Roberts (age 7, audience feedback)
